IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Officials in Iowa City are getting started on an estimated $8 million renovation of the downtown pedestrian mall.
KCRG-TV reports the City Council on Tuesday night hired an engineering firm that will spend most of 2017 planning the improvements.
Construction is expected to begin in 2018. That will include underground work to replace electrical components and buried pipe as well as above-ground work to rework brick walkways, replace planters and add an elevated stage.
A separate project that included extensive work on Washington Street, adjacent to the pedestrian mall, should be completed soon.
