Burlington’s sewer and trash rates are both forecast to rise in FY19 according to a proposed budget from Wastewater and Solid Waste Department Director Donald Fitting.
Burlington City Council members discussed the proposed budget at the third of four special work sessions on Monday night. Fitting says the Wastewater Treatment Department will be seeking a 3% increase in sewer fees, and Solid Waste is looking for a total .25 cent per month increase in trash fees.
“You’re going from $10.35 to $10.50 a month for the basic service… you’re going from $3.65 to $3.75 for the recycling portion,” Fitting described in his proposed budget. Under the proposed increase the basic trash charge on a quarterly-billed statement would go from $41.25 to $42.75.
Council members also discussed whether it would be possible to list trash charges on Burlington water bills to remind customers that they are paying for recycling in hopes they would utilize it more.
A fourth budget work session is scheduled for Thursday, the Park and Rec and Public Works departments are scheduled to present their proposed annual budgets.
