Burlington, Ia-  After the next city council meeting the city of Burlington will have a new mayor.

After the council’s latest work session saw the swearing-in of the two latest members of the council, Robert Critser, and Bill Maupin, the council will now vote on who will serve the office of Mayor.

In Burlington, which has a manager-council system of governing, council members choose among their ranks who is mayor rather than having that position elected by a vote of the public.

City Manager Jim Ferneau told the Burlington Beacon that the selection process has been a Burlington tradition for longer than even he knows.

Former Mayor Shane McCampbell held the office of Mayor for six years before deciding to step down and not seek re-election.

All Current members of the council besides Critser and Maupin are eligible to be appointed Mayor.
