Iowa City, Ia (Des Moines Register)- Coronavirus patients who are admitted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics are being asked to participate in a clinical trial for a drug that could treat the disease.
The Iowa Health Care System is one of 60 sites worldwide testing remdesivir, and experimental antiviral drug that’s shown promise against other strains of coronavirus.
The Des Moines Register reports that two studies, sponsored by the drug’s maker, California-based Gilead Sciences, will involve 1,600 patients with moderate symptoms and 2,400 patients with severe symptoms from across the globe.
The studies could lead to regulatory approval for remdesivir as treatment for COVID-19.
